he loves me he loves me not, 2024

Selected - AUSTRIA

The Totgeliebt (loved to death) exhibition focuses on the topic of femicide, in cooperation with the Arts and Cultural Association Semmelweisklinik in Vienna. The curators state: “In recent years, we are increasingly being confronted with reports of violence against women and girls. Media often describe this as “killing for love” or “relationship drama”. Perpetrators and murderers are often in a close relationship to the victims. These “individual case” terms mask the underlying structure and systemic violence that repeatedly culminate in these acts.

He loves me he loves me not artwork takes its reference from the autobiographical poem, Womanslaughter, 1978, by Pat Parker. Parker was an African American poet and activist. Her poetry spoke about her difficult childhood growing up in poverty and dealing with sexual assault, and the murder of her elder sister by the hands of her husband.

comments

  • There is something especially potent about these heart wrenching messages appearing in such a tiny locket that we associate with love

  • Stunning, poignant work

  • Chilling message set within the visual comfort of pretty hearts - all the more terrifying

  • Once again, you hit the nail on the head - the message so much stronger when you work in such a small scale

  • Beautiful work as always
